Meeting on Linac4 - PSB BI Line, 22-October-2007

Present: Bruno Balhan; Jan Borburgh; Brennan Goddard; Michael Hourican; Luc Sermeus; Wim Weterings

Excused: Tony Fowler

- The LINAC4 Work Breakdown Structure (WBS) was discussed. Our contribution is classed under LINAC4-3, PS Booster System, sub node LINAC4-3.1, Booster Injection Modifications. It was decided that for the next meeting a Work Breakdown Structure for the LINAC4-3.1 sub node will be made as input for EVM. The following contributions are required: BI.DIS, BI.SMV magnets - Jan Borburgh; BS Kicker magnets - Tony Fowler; Stripper foil unit - Wim Weterings.
- There is a new baseline proposal (PAC07-TUPAN109) w.r.t. LINAC4 TDR:
-Move KSW1L1 from period 1 to period 16.
-Full implications still to be checked (e.g. aperture, KSW1L1 design, …)
    -Modified BS parameters.
-Stripping foil dimensions and location change.
- BT will provide the mechanical design and supply of absorber blocks related to BT equipment, nevertheless support from AB-ATB and SC-RP will be required for conceptual design and activation analysis.
- Baseline design is for 2 Hz booster operation, is this really required?
- New equipment will not be reverse compatible to LINAC2 and re-installation of old equipment will be required.
- For the longitudinal painting and injection line optics details a working version needed to start looking at details of injection elements.
- For the required instrumentation, space is left in injection region but specifications is needed.
- BI.DIS re-design (mechanical design, magnetic calculations, 30 kV test stand) is in progress on the consolidation budget and the ferrite order in preparation. The power dissipation is difficult to estimate, will cooling or a test stand be required?
- Do we need the keep the ‘scraper’ in the BI.DIS, or will there be collimation in transfer line?
- For the PSB.BS magnet (16 in total) design is in progress, based on 2 types with 16 independent power supplies. 2D field calculations have been done, 3D calculations are more problematic. Prototype ordering has started.
- It was discussed that a study should be made about the possibility of fewer power supplies, by changing individual magnet designs (magnetic length, coil turns, etc.).
- BI.SMV (septum) re-design will start in 2008, there are issues of building high inductance curved magnet and a prototype is planned.
- For the stripping foil module design information gathering has started and detailed design will start when injection optics and layout is finished.
